Cheating the scale.

By Ryan | April 4, 2007

I don’t know if I’m alone in this, but am I the only one who cheats their scale? I’ve found if I weigh myself while holding onto something I come up 10-15 pounds lighter. Everytime after I do this, the scale comes up two pounds lighter than I was before I did my “cheat”. Does anyone else have their favorite weighs to “cheat the scale”?

  1. “favorite weighs” bad pun or spelling error?

The best time to weigh yourself is first thing in the morning after you go to the bathroom. If you drink alcohol before you go to bed it will dehydrate you and can usually cheat the scale 1-2 pounds. That’s not weight loss advice just a way to cheat. I try not to eat or drink anything (even water) after 9pm. I’m a little hungrier in the morning but at least the scale is catching me at my lightest.

I highly recommend using a line chart to calculate your average weight over the last 15 days. You are not going to consistently lose pounds every single day and using a chart makes the days you go up 1 or 2 pounds not seem like such a catastrophe in the grand scheme.

  3. That’s why I quit weighing myself daily. I look for ways to make it better than it actually is. Any more, I just weigh myself once a week at Weight Watchers and call it good.
